Baird & Associates Inc. are pleased to support New England Aqua Ventus (NEAV) in the US Coast Guard compliant Navigation Safety Risk Analysis (NSRA) and Navigation Safety Plan compliant with the State of Maine requirements. Baird uses its proprietary Navigational and Operational Risk Model (NORM) for consideration of collision, allision (vessel striking a fixed object), and grounding risk for marine traffic. Baird will also assist in stakeholder outreach and coordination with local boating, fishing, and commercial navigation interests.
This project will represent the USA’s very first Floating offshore wind installation and is an 11 Megawatt (MW) floating wind demonstration project to develop a clean, renewable energy source off Maine’s shores.
This demonstration project is unique in that it will mount a 11 MW wind turbine to a floating semisubmersible concrete hull called the VolturnUS, designed by the Advanced Structures and Composites Center at the University of Maine. The turbine is held in position in the ocean by three marine mooring lines securely anchored to the seabed and connected by a subsea cable to the Maine power grid.
As the developer, NEAV will own and manage all aspects of permitting, construction and assembly, deployment and ongoing operations for the project. UMaine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center will perform design and engineering, research and development and post-construction monitoring.
