National Coastal Risk Information and Planning Platform (NCRIPP)
Overview
The NCRIPP study assessed hazards, vulnerability and risk for a series of natural and anthropogenic hazards in Barbados. The final products include a Coastal Risk Atlas and an enterprise-level GIS and coastal GeoDatabase.
Project Highlights
The NCRIPP project (completed for the Barbados Government and funded by the Inter-American Development Bank) assessed coastal and island-wide hazards in Barbados and developed a software platform to investigate hazards, vulnerability and risk. The resulting NCRIPP software is an enterprise-level GIS and GeoDatabase that is used by the Barbados Government to increase resilience in vulnerable areas. The hazard assessment examined climate change, hurricanes, storm surge, rainfall induced flooding, landslides, shoreline erosion, earthquakes, tsunamis and oil spills. The vulnerability assessment documented the susceptibility and exposure of assets to create a vulnerability score.
The risk assessment determined total financial losses resulting from a range of hazards with different return periods, and mapped these values island-wide. A Coastal Risk Atlas was developed, and the ability within the NCRIPP software can create customized Hazard, Vulnerability and Risk maps.
