Planning, design and construction of beach stabilization and enhancement works for two sites in the Eastern Beaches, Toronto. The sites are located either side of an existing system of five offshore breakwaters. Baird provided planning, permitting, design and construction services for this $2.8M project.

Project Highlights

A Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (MCEA) included the development and evaluation of alternative concepts, public consultation and review, agency liaison/consultation, and the preparation of an Environmental Study Report. The MCEA process led to the selection of submerged offshore breakwaters with beach fill for the downdrift site, and shore-connected breakwaters (headlands) and beach fill for the updrift site.

Design development included wave climate and water level analyses, desktop analyses of coastal processes, and a physical model investigation. Final designs were developed based on the physical model results, desktop analyses and published information on similar projects, including consideration of the characteristics and costs of locally available beach fill and quarried stone materials.
