Case Study

Cotonou Sea Defense Project

Overview

Design and related investigations included:

  • Topographic, hydrographic surveys and cross-shore profiles
  • Aerial photos and satellite image acquisition to support storm damage surveys; GIS analysis of photos, maps and surveys
  • Wave data collection
  • Subsurface/geotechnical investigations
  • Quarry and stone supply investigations
  • Development of deep water wave climate from our WAVAD model of the Atlantic
  • Numerical modeling of nearshore wave transformation, nearshore currents, sand transport and morphologic change
  • Design of coastal structures amounting to 585,000 tons of stone; and beach nourishment design (600,000 m3)
  • Environmental analyses and the completion of an Environmental Assessment report

The project cost was $100 million including $38 million in rock placement, with the remainder consisting of quarrying, transport, concrete armor unit production and placement and beachfill. Baird provided periodic construction support services.

Project Challenges:
  • Needed to protect 4.5 miles of coastline that has eroded up to 2500 ft in the last 40 years
  • Longshore sand transport was (at approximately 1,000,000 m3/yr) interrupted by the port structures, fillet beach, navigation channel and coastal inlet, resulting in severe downdrift erosion for several miles
Project Solutions:
  • The adopted design consists of a 1000 ft-long breakwater, an 820 ft-long revetment, seven long groins, each 525 ft long
  • The deep draft port and inlet sedimentation aspect of the work included an evaluation of sedimentation rates, dredging history, quantification of dredged material and disposal options, channel design, preliminary design of inlet structure extension, navigation procedures and port operations

  • Whitesand First Nation Shoreline Stabilization

    Lake Nipigon, ON, Canada

Baird was retained to complete the planning, design and construction services to protect 1,400 metres of eroding shoreline on Whitesand First Nation traditional land, located on the north shore of Lake Nipigon. The design consisted of an armour stone revetment and slope stabilization.
