Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant Outfall

Overview

Baird was retained to undertake a receiving water impact assessment for the Ashbridges Bay wastewater treatment plant, with has a rated average flow of 818 MLD and a peak flow of 3923 MLD.  The selected outfall design extends 3500m offshore with a 1000m long diffuser.

The Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant required a new outfall to replace the existing outfall, which no longer met regulatory requirements or had the hydraulic capacity for peak flows. Baird was responsible for:

  • Completing the receiving water impact assessment to meet regulatory requirements
  • A detailed review of existing water quality data to define ambient conditions in Lake Ontario
  • Numerical modelling with MIKE3 and CORMIX to evaluate the dispersion of effluent from the proposed outfall and diffuser system with respect to the Ontario Ministry of Environment and Climate Change requirements for point source discharges
  • Evaluating mixing at the edge of the near-field mixing zone, at drinking water intakes, and at nearby beaches.
  • Evaluating several diffuser and outfall configurations

Project Highlights

  • A lake-wide MIKE3 model of Lake Ontario was used to capture the complex hydrodynamic processes including upwelling
  • The comprehensive modeling effort used CORMIX and MIKE3 to model the full range of conditions
  • The new outfall will extend to the edge of the Toronto Scarp, discharging effluent to the zone nearest to deep water
  • A comprehensive field data collection and monitoring program was implemented
  • Sediment processes modeling was undertaken to evaluate potential impacts of sediment on the diffuser
