Tsunami Risk Assessment
Overview
Baird was retained to evaluate the risks associated with tsunamis in the coastal city of Cartagena. Based on hydrodynamic modelling of tsunamis generated from earthquakes with magnitudes (Mw) from 8.3 to 8.9, potential flood hazards were mapped.

Baird was retained to evaluate the risks associated with tsunamis in the coastal city of Cartagena. Based on hydrodynamic modelling of tsunamis generated from earthquakes with magnitudes (Mw) from 8.3 to 8.9, potential flood hazards were mapped.
Project Challenges:
- Given strong seismic activity in the region, large earthquakes are likely to occur close to the city
- Large areas with low elevations exist in the southern part of the city
Project Solutions:
- A seismic study was contracted to local seismic experts to have a better understating of tsunami-triggering earthquakes on the Chilean coast
- Non-linear hydrodynamic equations were considered to obtain the best approximation to potential tsunami flooding in the lower part of the city
